Dollond 18th Century Cuban mahogany silver brass Stick Barometer.
Classic late 18th Century Cuban mahogany Stick Barometer in essentially original condition. The ‘break-arch’ pediment, with urn-shaped brass finial, over engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the maker and bearing manually operated vernier. The trunk, of finely patinated figured mahogany, edge moulded, and with original exposed barometer tube terminating within hemispherical cistern cover. Perhaps the most renowned of all barometer makers, the firm of Dollond was founded in the mid-18th Century by Peter Dollond, a Huguenot emigré, who became Instrument Maker and Optician to King George II. The firm flourished for over 150 years until its acquisition by Aitchison in 1913.
