Dollond - London. Exceptional and finely proportioned early 19th Century ‘flame’ mahogany-cased dwarf Wheel Barometer in original condition.
Exceptional and finely proportioned early 19th Century ‘flame’ mahogany-cased dwarf Wheel Barometer in original condition. The well-executed floral carved pediment over case, ebony strung, inset with expertly engraved silvered brass hygrometer, detachable Fahrenheit and Réaumur mercury thermometer, unusually small 6-inch diameter barometer dial signed by the maker; the protecting bowed glass is secured – unusually – via threaded rods. Rectangular spirit level to base. Perhaps the most sought-after of barometer makers, who, from inception, as optician/instrument maker to George III, achieved a world-renowned reputation for excellence, until eventual acquisition by Aitchison in 1913.
