Francis Watkins - London. Fine George II mahogany Stick Barometer. c1750 
An excellent and rare, George II Cuban mahogany Stick Barometer by this important maker. The arched and moulded cornice surmounted by 3 ball-and-spire brass finials on square podia. The engraved, silvered brass register plates, signed by the maker, with Summer and Winter notations, and flanked by twin mahogany columns with brass capitals and bases. The concealed barometer cistern tube terminating within 2-part turned cistern cover. An accomplished optical and mathematical instrument-maker, Watkins operated from premises at 5 Charing Cross from 1747-84, when he was succeeded by his two nephews, Jeremiah and Walter Watkins.
