James Bassnett - Liverpool. Fine mid-19th Century bow-fronted Marine Stick Barometer, c1840 
Attractive mid-19th Century bow-front mahogany Marine Stick Barometer. The ‘ogee’ pediment over engraved ivory register plates with rack-and-pinion operated vernier. The slender trunk, of solid mahogany, inset with mercury Fahrenheit thermometer, and concealing mercury barometer tube which terminates within turned cast brass cistern cover. Mounted on replaced gimbals. Originally a clockmaker, Bassnett, working from premises at 1 Roberts Street from 1829-55, became increasingly involved in nautical instrument making, and latterly taking his son, Thomas, into partnership.
