Good quality and unusual 19th Century oak cased 'Admiral Fitzroy's Storm Barometer' - No. 1610 - in original condition. The twin porcelain barometer plates, bearing rack-and-pinion operated vernier and signed by the makers. The inset mercury Fahrenheit thermometer plate also signed. Negretti & Zambra were the foremost Meteorological Instrument makers of the latter 19th and early 20th Centuries, producing a large volume of precision instruments. This type of barometer was produced, at Admiral Fitzroy's behest and at public expense, primarily for Life-boat Stations and fishing ports, and hence was assembled entirely using screws, rather than glue.
