Fine quality, mid-19th Century walnut cased Stick Barometer in essentially original condition. The arched pediment, with delicate applied acanthus leaf carving, over hand-engraved ivory register plates, signed by the maker with his 208 Piccadilly address, and protected by bevelled plate glass. The twin rack-and-pinion operated verniers, for ‘10am Yesterday’ and ‘10am Today’ also in ivory. The trunk, embellished with fine flower and leaf carving and inset with ivory Fahrenheit and Centigrade mercury thermometer. The concealed wide-bore barometer cistern tube terminating within carved shield shaped cistern cover. The third generation of a highly reputed and successful dynasty of Italian immigrant instrument makers, which flourished from 1805 until well into the 20th Century. Francis Pastorelli worked from his 4 Cross St. address from 1827-40, adding the prestigious 208 Piccadilly retail premises in1857.
