An early example of the unusual ‘Fisherman’s Aneroid Barometer – Issued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’ – No. 401 – with painted porcelain dial displaying Admiral Fitzroy’s “remarks” for prevailing weather conditions. Protected by bevelled glass, and in essentially original condition. [6 inches / 15 cm diameter]
Barometers of this type were specifically manufactured, to a high specification, for the Board of Trade, at Admiral Robert Fitzroy’s behest, by Dollond and Negretti & Zambra, and sold to masters of fishing vessels, initially for 5 shillings.
