Singularly elegant, late 18th Century mahogany Stick Barometer in essentially original condition. The arched top with finely engraved silvered brass register plate, bearing mercury Fahrenheit thermometer and most unusual cylindrical vernier slide. The case of well-patinated figured mahogany, edge-moulded and strung in ebony, the concealed barometer tube terminating behind turned cistern cover.

The son of a Cumberland farmer, Troughton was apprenticed to his uncle in London, before setting up very successfully on his own and working from various premises Fleet St. His barometers are made consistently to a very high standard. The firm later expanded considerably as Troughton & Sims.
